European Gasshuku October 2019

Posted on October 10, 2019 Written by admin Leave a Comment

It was great to see everyone last weekend at KNBK European Gasshuku in Wetteren.

Friday

We did basic waza in the morning (kamae, cutting, happo giri and the basic elements like te no uchi, nukitsuke, furi kaburi, kirioroshi, chiburi and noto. After lunch we did Omori ryu 1 to 8.

Saturday

On Saturday we revised the previous days Omori Ryu and then finished the series.  After lunch, we worked on the Tachi Uchi No Kata and then started the Batto ho Shoden Waza.  Well done for everyone who took and passed a test during lunch!

Sunday

Sunday was finishing off Battoho and Okuden waza and then Kumitachi.

It was a great weekend with all the KNBK European family and it is great to see member attendance grow.    I came away with lots of details to work on back at the dojo.  Look forward out seeing everyone again at another event across Europe.

Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu Workshop

Posted on October 27, 2017 Written by admin 24,379 Comments

Good practice tonight, it was good to have Vito and Linda sensei with us teaching Uchida Ryu Tanjojutsu which is part of the SMR Jodo curriculum. Thanks to every one who came to our extended practice!

Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu, Short Stick, was developed in the Meiji Period (late 1800s – early 1900s), and used to be referred to as “Sutteki” Jutsu.

At the time, walking sticks were in vogue (in Japanese, “Sutteki”), and the Tanjo was basically the same dimensions. The Tanjo is typically made of oak and is approximately two feet in length.

The curriculum is comprised of 12 kata – all Tanjo against Sword

  1. Kote Uchi Hidari
  2. Kote Uchi Migi
  3. Sutemi
  4. Kuritsuke
  5. Ushiro Zue
  6. Suigetsu Hidari
  7. Suigetsu Migi
  8. Shamen Higari
  9. Shamen Migi
  10. Kobushiku Daki
  11. Irimi
  12. Shuneku Daki

European KNBK Gasshuku Antwerp 2017

Posted on October 3, 2017 Written by admin 10,646 Comments

Last week, I travelled to Antwerp for the KNBK European Gasshuku which is held this time every year.

As previous years the theme was to cover as much of the Shoden level curriculum so that everyone got a lot of practice of the basics to work on.

I know I did.  With the Battoho and the Tachi Uchi no Kata refresher, the Friday was a lot of scribbling of notes during the breaks.

It was also good to spend time with Bokken in hand covering all three sets of paired Bokken Waza for Shoden level.

Over the weekend we covered:

Friday

  • Kamae
  • Kirioroshi
  • Happo Giri
  • Battoho Shodan
  • Tachi Uchi no Kata
  • Battoho Kumitachi

Saturday

  • Cutting Drills
  • Battoho Shodan
  • Battoho Okuden
  • Omori Ryu Seiza No Bu

Sunday

  • Tachi Uchi No Kurai
  • Free Practice
  • Tachi Uchi No Kata

Off the floor we had a great time at various restaurants. We don’t need to elaborate on that!

It was great to catch up with our European friends as well as a first visit of the Kenkyukai leaders from Plymouth.

Congratulations to everyone that took a test and passed on Saturday.

The dates for next years are already set so if you are thinking about coming next year – and it is a worthwhile trip. For 2018, the seminar will have the same format as this year, the date is already set for October 5, 6 & 7.

Get it in your diary now!
