Trion:Z Magnetic Bands

Posted on October 30, 2017 Written by admin 280 Comments

While not strictly martial arts, I wanted to share my view on the Trion:Z magnetic bands as I have found them a godsend in dealing with any aches and pains.  Especially for those, like me, with historical Tenouchi  (grip) problems!  #cough #cough…

I had such as a good experience with the Trion:Z that I contacted them to let them know and as I was so just gushing and gave them an idea for a potential new market – martial artists – they have given me a discount code to share with readers and dojo members.  So if you are considering getting a Trion:Z do use the links below and use the code SWORD10 (See what they did there?) and you will get 10% off any standard priced band.  The added benefit is they are also going to donate 15% to dojo funds for any purchases so please do use the links below.

I currently use the Zen Loop Solo as it is light and easy to wear – I even sleep with it on.  Only taking it off for training.

I find it has been an absolute godsend and really helped cut down on my elbow and joint pain.  So much so that I can now easily attend a 3 days seminar pain free.

Trion:Z magnetic therapy bracelets combine the benefits of both powerful Colantotte magnets, and negative ions. The unique polarised technology is considered by many health professionals to be an extremely powerful form of alternative therapy.

The next paragraphs of text are taken from the Trion:Z website

Why Trion:Z

Trion:Z is the only health and wellness product accepted and certified as an approved medical device by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare Government of Japan.

How magnets can aid your health and wellbeing

The effects of magnets have been studied by a number of eminent medical researchers. Evidence suggests that magnets may increase blood flow, which in turn would result in a more efficient perfusion of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

Whilst even the most powerful magnets do not have the ability to cure a disease. Millions of people believe in the beneficial effects of magnets and many of our customers report that using and wearing Trion:Z / Colantotte products helps their joint pain.

If you want to go full on Japanese you can try the Colantotte Tao Leone which is made from a high quality Japanese “Tochigi” leather.

Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu Workshop

Posted on October 27, 2017 Written by admin 24,379 Comments

Good practice tonight, it was good to have Vito and Linda sensei with us teaching Uchida Ryu Tanjojutsu which is part of the SMR Jodo curriculum. Thanks to every one who came to our extended practice!

Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu, Short Stick, was developed in the Meiji Period (late 1800s – early 1900s), and used to be referred to as “Sutteki” Jutsu.

At the time, walking sticks were in vogue (in Japanese, “Sutteki”), and the Tanjo was basically the same dimensions. The Tanjo is typically made of oak and is approximately two feet in length.

The curriculum is comprised of 12 kata – all Tanjo against Sword

  1. Kote Uchi Hidari
  2. Kote Uchi Migi
  3. Sutemi
  4. Kuritsuke
  5. Ushiro Zue
  6. Suigetsu Hidari
  7. Suigetsu Migi
  8. Shamen Higari
  9. Shamen Migi
  10. Kobushiku Daki
  11. Irimi
  12. Shuneku Daki

MJER Books for Study Aids

Posted on October 5, 2017 Written by admin 7,583 Comments

If you want to learn more about our styles of swordsmanship, these two books are a great grounding in the history of our style as well as visual guides to our waza and practice.  Both books are available to buy on Amazon.

Flashing Steel (2nd Edition)

Flashing Steel, the best-selling and highly acclaimed book on iaijutsu (alternatively called iaido), is as much about bringing life into focus as it is about techniques of swordsmanship. Iaijutsu was the martial art of the samurai of feudal Japan who remain the most enduring of warrior icons, equally popular in the East and the West. Iaijutsu sword training has philosophical tenets that inform the warrior’s life, building compassion and self-discipline both inside and outside the dojo.

Shimabukuro Shihan and Pellman Sensei combine practical exercises, photographs, and historical and cultural context in a thoughtful guide to this most popular of Japanese sword arts. The book features Master Masayuki Shimabukuro’s renowned expertise and classical training, with Leonard Pellman adapting the information for a Western audience. Included here are dozens of kata (formal training patterns) that govern iaijutsu, with partner exercises applying the principles of the art in realistic attack and defense situations. These kata are also widely practiced by students of kendo, aikido, and other sword-based martial arts, giving the book a wider relevance beyond iaijutsu. This second edition of Flashing Steel includes new techniques, updated photographs, and theoretical explanations for both new and existing sword forms.

Samurai Swordsmanship: The Batto, Kenjutsu, and Tameshiri of Eishin-Ryu

Describing the principles and techniques that define Japan’s most popular style of swordsmanship, this martial arts manual gives practitioners master-level instruction. This book is a collection of the most effective and proven fighting methods spanning from the feudal to the modern eras. It illuminates the art with masterful photography and is accompanied by in-depth descriptions of the methods perfected by Japan’s ancient warrior class.

Providing instruction on the etiquette, fundamental footwork, striking, countering, defensive tactics, test cutting, maintenance, and safety needed for proficiency in authentic swordsmanship, this expert guide transports martial arts practitioners beyond mere physical technique and opens the door to self-mastery through the use of the samurai sword.”
